The ride stats (by Seiya Bowen)

Checkpoints

North Island

  1. Cape Reinga
The Lighthouse and I the night before the start

2. 90 Mile Beach

The team fighting the headwinds on the 88km beach section

3. Tane Mahuta

Night time – this very old tree is asleep and therefore closed to visitors!

4. Pouto Point

Waiting for the Ferry to Helensville, just before the bagpipes began

5. Mt. Eden, Auckland

Views of Auckland by night

6. Waikato Cows

Making friends

7. Matamta/Hobbiton i-SITE

Sleepy morning at the Lord of the Rings Hobbit House

8. Centre of the North Island

Sweaty arrival at the centre of the world after some awesome single track climbs

9. Ongarue Spiral, Timber Trail

Ready to loop-the-loop, getting some speed up

10. Bridge to Nowhere

Hoping to go ‘somewhere’ – fingers crossed there is a morning Jet Boat!

11. Durie Hill Elevator Lookout, Whanagnui

Waiting on the Dr Who Elevator lady

12. Totara Reserve, Pohangia Valley

Looking unimpressed – maybe I missed the significance of this one…

13. Eketahuna Kiwi

A GIANT Kiwi – eyes peeled for a real one

14. Summit Tunnel, Rimutaka Rail Trail

Tunnel time

15. Cook Strait from the Ferry

Overnight ferry to Picton

South Island

16. Maungatapu Saddle

Before the tyre wall tear, that nearly led to tears

17. Lake Rotoroa, Nelson Lakes National Park

Not to be confused with Lake Rotorua in the North Island

18. Maruia Saddle Road

19. Waiuta Track Boardwalk

Rough day in the rain after sleeping on a park bench in Reefton, made so much better by a Fantail dancing for me!

20. Greymouth Bar

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere, but at a different kind of bar!

21. Hokitika Clock

Banging brekkie next door to the ever ticking clock

22. Lake Ianthe

Danish by the Lake

23. Fox Glacier

Nowt much to see at 2330, will need to re visit in daylight.

24. Knights Point Lookout

Got the traffic lights all wrong, but was jammie and still got through 🙂

25. Haast Pass

Steep AF, but stunning climbs today. Taken just before my sunnies flew off my helmet and I found out there is no room at the inn in Wanaka, due to the A&P show.

26. Hawea River Track Bridge

Trying to remember to take photos of checkpoints when you are tired and it’s dark…

27. Cardrona Hotel, Crown Range

Iconic! – on a mission to reach the Steamboat, not the most fun road to cycle

28. Queenstown

The TSS Earnslaw across Lake Wakatipu, before joining for afternoon tea party at Walter Peak Station

29. A Southland Local

A few locals

30. Stirling Point, Bluff Signpost

The Finish – head winds and driving rain all the way to Bluff and no accommodation available due to the Pipe Band Championships. But no-one to pipe me in, as it was all over by the time I arrived!
